It is known and valued for its bark which played an important part in the lives of Native Americans. The inner bark contains a starchy carbohydrate substance called mucilage. When it’s mixed with water it swells and forms a slippery gel. Mucilage is used as a soothing demulcent. Demulcents offers soothing support for mucous membranes*.
